NRP-UP has recorded a major victory in Lundazi Central Constituency after Brenda Nyirenda retained her parliamentary seat with a landslide victory over her closest challenger, Golden Tembo of the UPND.

Nyirenda was officially declared the duly elected Member of Parliament by Lundazi District Returning Officer Joseph Mugolo at the constituency tallying centre.

The final parliamentary results were:

• Brenda Nyirenda — NRP-UP: 31,315 votes
• Golden Tembo — UPND: 7,693 votes

Nyirenda therefore won by a commanding margin of 23,622 votes.

The result represents a significant consolidation of support for the Brian Mundubile-led NRP-UP in Lundazi, with the party also securing all the local government seats in the district, according to results from the constituency.

The victory is particularly notable given Lundazi’s importance in Eastern Province, where the presidential contest and parliamentary races have been closely watched.

Early presidential results from Lundazi Central also showed Mundubile performing strongly. Final constituency figures reported by local results trackers put Mundubile on 27,531 votes against Hakainde Hichilema’s 9,551, although the presidential tally remains subject to the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s formal consolidation and declaration.

The Lundazi result adds to a broader picture emerging from Eastern Province, where NRP-UP has been making significant gains in the parliamentary contest.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia’s results portal lists Eastern Province as having 28 constituencies, with NRP-UP among the parties winning seats in the province.

Nyirenda’s victory also marks her return to Parliament after previously representing Lundazi. She had served as Lundazi MP after winning the seat in the 2021 election.

Her latest victory is considerably larger in numerical terms, with the 31,315 votes giving her a commanding lead over the UPND candidate.

The result is also being viewed as an important local demonstration of the strength of the Mundubile-Makebi Zulu ticket, which campaigned extensively across Eastern Province ahead of the August 13 election.

For NRP-UP supporters, the Lundazi outcome is more than a parliamentary victory: the simultaneous capture of the constituency and local government positions gives the party a significant political foothold in the district.

The wider Eastern Province picture is still being consolidated, however, and the final balance of parliamentary seats will depend on the completion and official declaration of results by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
