Bobby East Endorses President Hakainde Hichilema, Cites Economic Stability
LUSAKA – Zambian musician and entrepreneur Bobby East has publicly declared his support for President Hakainde Hichilema ahead of the country’s elections, saying his decision is driven by Zambia’s economic progress and the need to preserve stability.
In a statement announcing his endorsement, Bobby East acknowledged that political endorsements can be divisive but said remaining silent would not reflect his convictions.
“I know how sensitive politics is, and that taking a stance risks dividing a fan base. The easy choice would be to stay quiet, play it safe, and just drop music,” he said.
The award-winning artist also reflected on his experience as an entrepreneur, explaining that a previous business venture failed despite strong sales because of an unstable exchange rate that made it impossible to operate profitably.
According to Bobby East, today’s more stable currency would have allowed that same business to succeed, leading him to conclude that economic stability is the most important foundation for entrepreneurs.
“We don’t want government handouts—we just want a fair and stable environment where hard work actually stands a chance,” he stated.
Commenting on the country’s economic direction, Bobby East argued that while many Zambians are still facing high living costs, the government’s economic reforms have laid the groundwork for long-term recovery. He said economic improvements often take time to be fully felt by households because of what economists refer to as the “lag effect.”
He further warned against abandoning the current economic course, saying Zambia had already made significant sacrifices to restore stability after years of economic challenges.
“We have all had to tighten our belts to fix what was inherited from the past. It has been sometimes painful. But we are finally reaching the point where that sacrifice is starting to pay off. To change direction now and risk losing this stability would be a massive mistake,” he said.
Concluding his statement, Bobby East formally endorsed President Hichilema, saying Zambia needs consistency to consolidate its economic gains.
“Zambia needs consistency to fully heal. That is why I am doing this with a completely clear conscience. I am supporting Hakainde Hichilema because we must protect the progress we have suffered for and move forward together. Posterity will judge us all.”
The endorsement adds Bobby East’s voice to the growing public debate over the country’s economic direction as Zambia heads toward the polls.
