Zambia Rugby Union [ZRU] Vice President Jeremiah Manda says the future of rugby in the country depends on grassroots development through schools tournaments.
Speaking during the two-day Sothylingam Super 7’s tournament at Lechwe School in Kitwe, Manda commended the school for hosting youngsters from community and private schools to compete in rugby and hockey.
“Firstly, we would like to thank Lechwe School for this initiative of inviting other schools and hosting this schools tournament. Any sport is about grassroots development. In rugby, we need to start from the grassroots. We need to keep the children busy and to keep them going,” he said.
Manda called on the corporate world to come on board and support such tournaments.
“I would like to see more of these tournaments involving children both in private and public schools. The corporate world should come in to sponsor these kinds of tournaments,” he said.
“The growth of sports in this country is dependent on school rugby. This is the way to go and the future is bright. Let’s make this tournament big,” he added.
The tournament will conclude with an exhibition match between Kitwe rugby rivals Diggers and KPF.
