ZESCO Ltd. said it is conducting scheduled maintenance on electricity infrastructure ahead of the rainy season.

The utility said the work is intended to strengthen the network and ensure a safe and reliable power supply. Infrastructure is more vulnerable during the rainy season to lightning, strong winds, falling trees and flooding, the company said.

Maintenance includes inspecting, repairing and replacing equipment, clearing vegetation near power lines and fixing defects at substations and along distribution lines.

ZESCO said interruptions from the maintenance should not be confused with load shedding.

“Scheduled maintenance involves planned, localized and time-bound interruptions to enable engineers to work safely on specific sections of the network,” the company said in a statement. “Load shedding, on the other hand, is the controlled reduction of electricity demand when available generation is insufficient to meet national demand.”

The company said the outages do not signal a return to load shedding and that only specifically identified areas will be affected. Customers will be notified in advance through SMS, public notices and traditional and digital media.

ZESCO urged customers to treat all lines and equipment as live, even during interruptions, and to report fallen conductors, damaged poles or exposed cables immediately.
