STAFFORD MULUSA SAYS NO UNDUE INFLUENCE WILL BE EXERTED ON PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION MPS

Former Government Chief Whip in the National Assembly Stafford Mulusa says there will be no undue influence exerted on members of Parliament elected under the Proportional Representation system.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- on Friday validated 17 women lawmakers from the UPND and 3 from the opposition National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity -NRPUP-.

In the persons with disabilities category, 3 seats were allocated to the UPND and 2 to the NRPUP, while the UPND received 12 seats in the youth category, compared to 3 for the NRPUP.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Mulusa, who is also Solwezi North Member of Parliament says the National Assembly has established procedures through which lawmakers debate and pass legislation.

He has however noted that while lawmakers elected under the party’s banner will be expected to exercise their independent judgment during parliamentary debates, they will also be expected to support the party’s policies during parliamentary business.

Mr. Mulusa further says members of Parliament elected under Proportional Representation should not be expected to disregard their political backgrounds.

He explains that political parties have policies and programmes which their members are expected to advance objectively when debating legislation, while supporting measures that are beneficial to the nation.
