For Zambians planning their next holiday, business trip or family visit, the good news is that a Zambian passport provides access to a number of destinations without requiring travellers to obtain a visa before departure.
As of September 2026, current passport-travel data lists 44 destinations where ordinary Zambian passport holders can enter without arranging a visa in advance. A further 17 destinations offer visas on arrival, while four use electronic travel authorisation systems.
However, visa-free travel does not mean a traveller can automatically enter a country without meeting any conditions. Immigration authorities may still require a valid passport, proof of accommodation, return or onward travel, sufficient funds, travel insurance or other documentation, depending on the destination and purpose of the trip.
The 44 destinations currently listed as visa-free for Zambian passport holders are Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bermuda, Botswana, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Ecuador, Eswatini, Fiji, Grenada, Haiti, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Micronesia, Montserrat, Mozambique, Namibia, the Philippines, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, San Marino, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Svalbard and Jan Mayen, Tanzania, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Vanuatu and Zimbabwe.
Some of these destinations have specific permitted stays. For example, the current data lists visa-free stays of up to three months for destinations including Botswana, Benin, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Kenya, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. Belize is listed at 30 days, Dominica at 21 days, Micronesia at 30 days, Mozambique at 30 days and Vanuatu at four months.
Travellers should always verify the exact permitted stay and entry conditions before booking flights because immigration requirements can change.

A significant number of the visa-free destinations are in Africa, reflecting the importance of regional integration and bilateral arrangements on the continent.
Zambians can travel without a visa to African destinations including Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Benin and Togo are also included in the current visa-free list.
For many African countries, easier movement is linked to efforts to encourage regional trade, tourism, investment, employment and people-to-people connections.
The same principle applies beyond Africa. Visa-free arrangements can be established through bilateral agreements, regional cooperation, diplomatic relationships and reciprocal decisions between governments.
There can also be an economic incentive for countries to reduce visa restrictions.
Countries seeking to attract more tourists may lower entry barriers because international visitors spend money on hotels, restaurants, transport, attractions and local businesses. Easier movement can also encourage business people, students and investors to travel between countries.
Zambia itself has used visa waivers as part of efforts to increase tourism, business and investment. In January 2025, Zambia implemented a waiver covering nationals of 53 additional countries, with the Department of Immigration saying the policy was intended to make Zambia more attractive as a destination while supporting economic growth.
Visa policy can also be based on reciprocity. In simple terms, one country may remove visa requirements for citizens of another country when similar treatment is offered to its own citizens.
Governments can also negotiate specific arrangements based on diplomatic, economic and regional relationships.
An example is Zambia’s agreement with Ghana announced in February 2026. Ghana and Zambia agreed to abolish visa requirements for their citizens, with the arrangement intended to improve movement for business, tourism, education and other exchanges. However, reports at the time noted that a formal commencement date for implementation had not yet been announced, meaning travellers should verify the current operational status before relying on the agreement.
It is also important for Zambians to understand the difference between visa-free travel, visa on arrival and e-visa travel.
With visa-free entry, the traveller normally does not need to obtain a visa before travelling or upon arrival, although normal immigration requirements still apply.
A visa on arrival means the traveller can travel without obtaining the visa beforehand but must complete the visa process after reaching the destination.
An e-visa is different because the traveller generally needs to apply electronically before travelling.
Current 2026 passport data shows that, in addition to the 44 visa-free destinations, Zambian passport holders have access to 17 destinations offering visas on arrival and four destinations using electronic travel authorisation systems. Another 19 destinations offer e-visas, while 163 destinations are listed as requiring a visa before travel.
The Henley Passport Index also places Zambia’s passport at 74th globally in its 2026 ranking, with an access score of 64 destinations under its methodology.
For anyone planning international travel, however, the safest approach is to check the destination country’s official immigration authority or embassy immediately before booking flights or travelling.
Visa policies can change because of new agreements, diplomatic decisions, security considerations or changes to immigration regulations.
A visa-free passport therefore does not mean “travel anywhere without conditions.”
Instead, it means that for certain destinations, Zambian citizens can begin their journey without first obtaining a conventional visa.
For Zambian travellers looking for easier international trips in 2026, Africa remains particularly accessible, while destinations in the Caribbean, Asia, Pacific and other regions also offer opportunities for visa-free travel.
