Many Zambians have taken to social media to reject suggestions that the unresolved burial of former President Edgar Lungu will influence how they vote in next month’s general election.

The debate followed a Facebook post by South African broadcaster SABC, which questioned whether President Hakainde Hichilema could retain power amid the fallout surrounding the burial dispute.

In response, numerous Zambians said the burial issue would not determine their voting decisions. Some described it as a private family matter, while others said the country’s focus had shifted to development and governance ahead of the August 13 polls.

The comments come as the burial of the late former president remains unresolved. Mr. Lungu, Zambia’s sixth President, died in South Africa on June 5, 2025. His burial has been delayed following a legal dispute between his family and the Zambian Government over where he should be laid to rest.

Last month, South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Lungu family, affirming their right to determine the burial location. Since then, no burial date has been announced.

Meanwhile, National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile recently told supporters during a campaign rally in Chinsali that he and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, would facilitate the burial of the former president if elected in the August 13 general election.
