Zambia : Zambia Scores Improvements On PISA

 Government says it has significantly improved the education sector through several interventions.

Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Kelvin Mambwe, says this progress has been demonstrated by the latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results released by the Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD), in which Zambia outperformed several participating countries.

Dr Mambwe was speaking when stakeholders observed an online results release by OECD in Lusaka.

Dr Mambwe said Zambia will continue to expand and improve its education system through several interventions such as free education, recruitment of teachers, and infrastructure development among others.

“As you can see, Zambia registered a notable gain of 50 points in reading scores compared to previous baseline data from 2018, placing it among a small group of countries showing upward reading trajectories and average results also improved across mathematics and science,” he said

Meanwhile, OECD Paris Data Manager for PISA, Guillaume Bouquet, said PISA measured the skills of 15-year olds in science, reading and mathematics globally.

“Zambia performed very well in mathematics, reading and science and there is a brighter future for the education sector,” Mr Bouquet stated.

Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) Director for Research and Planning, Shadrick Nkoya said (ECZ) implemented the programme on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

Dr Nkoya stated that Zambia is among 90 countries that participated in the 2025 PISA, organised by the OECD with results showing improvements in reading, science and mathematics by learners.

“From previous results Zambia was always on the bottom but the 2025 results showed significant improvement and one day we shall top the chart; he said.
