Team Zambia on Friday secured its first two medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games from boxing after Catherine Mwape and Emmanuel Katema claimed bronze medals in their respective weight categories.

Mwape made history by becoming the first Zambian female boxer to win a Commonwealth Games medal, earning bronze in the Women’s 54kg category. Her medal is also Team Zambia’s first medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Mwape settled for bronze after a spirited performance in the semi-final, where she was defeated by Preeti Preeti of India.

The National Olympic Committee of Zambia – NOCZ said throughout the tournament, she demonstrated courage, determination and skill to secure her place on the podium and write her name into Zambia’s sporting history.

“Despite falling to Preeti of India in the Women’s 54kg Semi-Final, Catherine displayed tremendous courage, determination and skill throughout the competition to secure Zambia another medal on the Commonwealth stage,” NOCZ stated.

In the men’s boxing, Katema added to Team Zambia’s medal tally by winning bronze in the 65kg category, becoming Team Zambia’s second medallist at the Games.

Katema’s campaign came to an end in the semi-final following a hard-fought contest against Patris Mughalzai of England.

His outstanding performances throughout the competition showcased his resilience, talent and determination, earning Zambia another place on the Commonwealth Games podium.

“Congratulations to Catherine Mwape and Emmanuel Katema for flying the Zambian flag high at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games,” NOCZ stated.

By Friday lunchtime, Zambia was number 26 on the overall medals table.

By news time, Australia was leading the medals table with 51 gold, 24 silver and 35 bronze.

Nigeria is so far the best performing African nation with 8 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze.
