Vice President Mutale Nalumango has appealed to traditional leaders to continue promoting peace and unity in the country as a pre-requisites for national development.

Mrs Nalumango underscored the need for stability if developmental initiatives such as the Grow Zambia Agenda are to be successful.

Mrs Nalumango said this in a speech read for her by Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Gilbert Siame during the Walamo traditional ceremony of the Lungu people of Mpulungu district.

The Vice President highlighted the significant role traditional leadership plays in ensuring national building, and in the preservation of culture, and tradition.

“Let us build a country where culture and development walk hand in hand, a country where a child will be in school in the morning, and dance at the Walamo ceremony in the evening with pride and dignity,” Mrs Nalumango said.

And Mrs Nalumango says the government recognises the rich mineral endowments in Mpulungu and that the government will endeavor to ensure the full exploitation of minerals for the benefit of local people.

The Vice President added that Mpulungu district is well-positioned to contribute to renewable energy.

“I have been informed that there is potential for high grade lithium in this area and we all know that it is important for clean energy,” she said.

She further emphasised the need for responsible mining activities and ensuring that water sources remain safe.

Mrs Nalumango also called on young people to take advantage of the small-scale and artisanal fund under the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development once operational and benefit from it.

And Senior Chief Tafuna, Mwine bu Lungu, Chimwando II, reiterated his chiefdom’s commitment to fostering national healing in the post-election period.

Speaking through his representative, Jane Sakala, Senior Chief Tafuna said people of bu Lungu will continue to preach peace and tolerance.

 “Elections come and go, but our country remains, let us not allow politics to divide us,” he said.

The 2026 Walamo Traditional Ceremony was celebrated under the theme “Preserving our cultural, traditional, and customary heritage.
