Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Joe Kalusa has reaffirmed Government’s commitment in supporting traditional Ceremonies across the country.

Mr Kalusa emphasised that traditional Ceremonies play a critical role in fostering national development.

He was speaking when he officiated at the Dantho traditional ceremony of the Chikunda people of Luangwa district in Chief Mphuka’s Chiefdom.

Permanent Secretary also disclosed that the Government has recorded success in sensitising farmers on innovative farming techniques and practical demonstrations through the department of agriculture.

He said the Government continues to support Agriculture in order to uplift the living standards of the people.

Mr Kalusa also disclosed that 240 farmers in Chief Mphuka’s Chiefdom benefited from the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).

“Farmers have already received inputs in time and we are hopeful that this 2026/2027 will be a successful farming season,” said Mr Kalusa.

Chief Mphuka, who was represented by Datho Organising Committee Secretary, Ziphani Phiri, said the traditional ceremony is important in remembering the ancestors and promoting peace among the Chikunda people.

“This traditional ceremony is performed in a small hut which contains twelve clay pots bearing the names of our ancestors, where prayers are offered asking them to provide enough rainfall and a season free from drought,” he explained.

Chief Mphuka also expressed gratitude to the Government for the early distribution of farming inputs to the farmers in his Chiefdom.

Feira Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Tembo appealed to authorities to ensure that the challenge of Human-Animal conflict should be addressed.

Mr Tembo expressed concern that community members’ crop harvests are usually affected by the elephants in particular, that end up eating the produce in the crop fields.

“Our members’ crops yields are usually low because  of animals destroying their crops and I therefore appeal that we find a way to reduce the number of elephants that have since increases in number, making it difficult for our farmers to protect their fields when attacked,” bemoaned Mr Tembo.

The Dantho Traditional Ceremony that was celebrated under the theme “Dantho: Our culture, our unity, and our Future “attracted traditional leaders, government officials and other stakeholders from across the province.
