President Hakainde Hichilema has assured the international community that Zambia remains committed to peace, democracy and inclusive development, following the country’s recently concluded general elections.

President Hichilema has noted that Zambians exercised their constitutional right to choose their leaders during the polls, in line with Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which affirms that the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government.

He has stressed that Zambia is not at war, but remains peaceful, stable and sovereign, noting that the democratic process should never be mistaken for conflict or instability.

The Head of State said this in a General Debate Statement delivered for him by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, during the United Nations General Assembly, in New York.

President Hichilema said despite political differences that naturally accompany elections, Zambia has demonstrated that such differences can and must be managed peacefully through constitutional and legal institutions.

President Hichilema reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to preserving Zambia’s long-standing tradition of peace, stressing that authorities would continue to ensure political differences are addressed through due process of the law.

He added that the calm atmosphere before, during and after the elections reflects the Zambians’ enduring commitment to peace, democracy, national unity and constitutional governance.

The Head of State however added that measures would be taken, within the confines of the Constitution, to prevent disputes from degenerating into violence, armed mobilisation, and insurgency or militia groups.

He further encouraged partners to view Zambia through the lens of peace and stability, and to deepen support for programmes that promote inclusive economic growth, job creation, infrastructure development, human capital development, agriculture, energy, health and other priority areas.

“Our message is clear: Zambia is at peace, Zambia is open for partnership, and Zambia is ready to grow,’’ the Head of State emphasised.

He further expressed appreciation to international election observation missions for what he described as their invaluable support and contribution to Zambia’s democratic process.

The General Debates Session was held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,’’ he stated.
