UNICEF has donated Two Million Kwacha worth of infection prevention supplies and water, sanitation and hygiene equipment, aimed at strengthening detection of viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Lusaka, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Kennedy Lishimpi, clarified that the donation design is driven by preparedness, rather than reacting to threats as they emerge.

Dr Lishimpi said the donation will enhance the ministry’s ability to address current public health challenges and remain vigilant and prepared to prevent diseases such as Ebola from crossing the borders and affecting the citizens.

“We are choosing to act ahead of potential threats rather than react after they emerge, we are fully aware of the devastating impact that infectious disease outbreaks can have on nations, communities, and health systems,” he said.

Dr Lishimpi also disclosed that UNICEF is yet to donate 150 Ambulance vehicles by the end of September, out of which 50 are already in the country and a consignment of 200 vaccine refrigerators.

Meanwhile, UNICEF Country Representative, Saja Abdullah, said investing in preparedness before an emergency, will ensure that health workers are protected, communities safeguarded and that children continue to receive essential services they need before a crisis.

Dr Abdullah added that availability of essential items will ensure that health workers can respond quickly, provide safe care and contain any potential outbreak timely and effectively.

She added that the donation is a reflection of the strong partnership shared by both parties.
