POLICE are warning the public against sharing false information after a social media post claimed 1,180 people were being held in Lusaka cells on politically motivated charges.

Assistant Public Relations Officer Timothy Malumo told the newsroom that the public should rely on official Zambia Police Service channels for verified information.

He said the Police Service did not issue or confirm those figures and that the information circulating online is false and misleading.

Police said the deliberate creation and spread of false information can undermine public confidence and damage the institution’s reputation.

The service urged people to verify information about arrests, custody and investigations with the Zambia Police Service before publishing or sharing it on social media.

Police added that appropriate action will be taken against those who deliberately misrepresent police operations or circulate false information intended to damage the service’s reputation.
