Director of Public Health Castro Chisanga says the local authority has, over the past month, conducted a dog‑elimination exercise after the district recorded a confirmed rabies case that resulted in one death in August this year.
Speaking in an interview with the media, Mr Chisanga disclosed that the Council has received numerous complaints about stray dogs and dog bites from members of the public.
“We had a fatality this year, where one person died from confirmed rabies, as a local Authority, we moved in to ensure prevention through elimination of stray and unvaccinated dogs,”Mr Chisanga said.
He explained that the exercise was also intended to limit households to owning only two dogs and to encourage those who want additional dogs to follow the right procedure.
Mr Chisanga disclosed that since the commencement of the exercise, 63 dogs have been registered, and he expressed hope that more will be captured before the exercise concludes this Friday.
” People are usually forced to bring dogs for registration once we conduct such an exercise as such, I am sure the number will go up by the time we will be concluding the exercise,” Mr Chisanga said.
Meanwhile, District Fisheries and Livestock Coordinator Manley Mazhilà says the department vaccinated 285 dogs against rabies in the second quarter.
Dr Mazhilà noted that this is despite the district having an estimated dog population of about 5,000.
He explained that the low turnout for dog vaccinations may be due to many dogs having already been vaccinated earlier this year and last year.
Dr Mazhila further attributed the low turnout for dog vaccinations to earlier doses that were administered and are not yet due for renewal.
He added that, generally, annual vaccination coverage ranges between 30% and 40%, but rises to between 80% and 90% when the department receives free vaccines from government or cooperating partners and is able to conduct mass vaccination exercises.
Dr Mazhilà noted that stray‑dog elimination by the local authority is helping to compel residents to have their dogs vaccinated against rabies.
He, however, added that the department will embark on sensitization to ensure the public is aware of the importance of vaccination.
Dr Mazhilà also disclosed that the district recorded 76 dog‑bite cases and 54 referrals for human anti‑rabies treatment during the same period.
