Zambia : New MPs Pledge To Develop Constituencies

Newly sworn-in Sesheke West Member of Parliament (MP) Frederick Misebezi has pledged to prioritise modern infrastructure, financial services and other development projects aimed at transforming the rural constituency.

Speaking shortly after being sworn in as Member of Parliament , Mr Misebezi said Sesheke West’s strategic position as a border constituency bordering Namibia and Angola requires significant investment in infrastructure and services.

Mr Misebezi explained that the constituency serves as an important entry point into Zambia through the Katima Mulilo border, making its development important to the country’s image.

He said one of his immediate priorities is improving access to banking services, noting that the entire Sesheke district currently has only one bank.

Mr Misebezi said the limited banking services create challenges for residents and international travellers, particularly when the sole bank experiences technical difficulties, adding that he has already begun engaging the private sector, particularly financial institutions, to explore ways of increasing banking services in the area.

The lawmaker also identified the shortage of filling stations as another challenge requiring urgent attention.

“Sesheke district currently has only one filling station, forcing motorists to cross into Namibia to purchase fuel whenever the local facility is unable to operate,” he said.

Mr Misebezi noted that although his role as an MP includes legislation, he also intends to actively lobby central government and the private sector for investment in the constituency.

And newly sworn in  Mwandi MP Iris Kaingu has prioritised water reticulation, road rehabilitation and improved mobile phone connectivity as key interventions to improve the lives of people in the constituency.

Ms Kaingu said water shortages have reached crisis levels, while poor road infrastructure and limited communication networks continue to affect service delivery and the livelihoods of residents.

She said improving the road network would also be among her immediate priorities, noting that Mwandi already has road construction machinery acquired by the previous MP.

She also identified poor mobile phone connectivity as a major challenge, saying an estimated 80 to 85 percent of people in Mwandi have limited or no access to reliable mobile network services.

The lawmaker said some residents are forced to seek elevated or isolated locations to access communication services, a situation she described as unacceptable in an era where communication is essential for accessing information and services.

She further identified women’s health as a critical area requiring urgent attention, particularly the lack of adequate maternal healthcare services, adding that Mwandi has only one district hospital serving a population of about 40,000 people, which she said was inadequate.

Ms Kaingu said she would lobby the government for improved healthcare services and infrastructure in the constituency.

She also pledged to work with President Hakainde Hichilema and the government to deliver development to the people of Mwandi.

Ms Kaingu also pledged to use her position to advocate for greater participation of women in leadership, both in Parliament and at local and community levels, further encouraging more women to take up leadership positions, saying increased participation by both women and men in leadership would help bridge existing gaps and contribute to national development.

Meanwhile, newly sworn in Lima MP Kelvin Kaunda has prioritised clean water and sanitation, infrastructure development, enterprise support and industry-driven skills training to improve livelihoods and create jobs in the constituency.

Mr Kaunda said addressing water challenges, particularly in George Compound in Lusaka District, would help curb waterborne diseases and reduce the recurring threat of cholera during the rainy season.

He explained that infrastructure development would cover roads, drainage systems, health facilities, police posts and other essential public infrastructure.

Mr Kaunda also pledged to support agricultural activities in the constituency’s agricultural hub, describing agriculture as an important economic opportunity for improving food security and reducing poverty.
