Zambia : Govt. Urges Youths To Work With New Leaders

North‑Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Luckson Mulumbi, has urged youths across the province to work with newly elected leaders in driving development in the area.

Speaking when he officiated at the launch of the Solwezi Youth Alive Empowering Voices of Youths, Women and Persons with Disabilities Project, Mr Mulumbi said young people have an equal responsibility to hold their elected leaders accountable.

“It is important that we see you, young people attending meetings, but contribute effectively to the discourse so that issues affecting your communities can also begin to change,” he said.

Mr Mulumbi has meanwhile implored women and persons with disabilities to take an active role in governance processes, saying governance is a shared responsibility that should not be left to government alone.

“Zambia’s population is largely youthful, and as such, your government has realised the need for the inclusion of the majority to meaningfully participate in the governance matters of our country,” Mr Mulumbi said.

Meanwhile, Solwezi Youth Alive Assistant Programmes Officer, Marriah Chiwaya, said the project includes training 50 marginalised participants in civic engagement and inclusion.

“Right now, we are training 50 youths in advocacy and leadership. Thereafter, they will also be required to train other youths who will be part of the project,” Ms Chiwaya said.

She added that the project also includes a skills‑empowerment component, under which participants will be trained in conservation farming.
