Zambia : President Hichilema Eulogises Late Ambassador Zyuulu

President Hakainde Hichilema says Zambia’s foreign policy must serve the interests of the nation and not individuals.

President Hichilema says government officials representing Zambia abroad should always put national interests above personal interests.

The President said this in Lusaka today when he paid tribute to Zambia’s late Ambassador to China, Ivan Zyuulu, during a church service held at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

President Hichilema, who was represented by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, said Dr Zyuulu raised the diplomatic bar during his tour of duty in Beijing through his tireless efforts to strengthen Zambia’s bilateral relations with China.

He said the late Ambassador’s commitment to strengthening economic ties between Zambia and China contributed to improved and mutually beneficial relations in various sectors, including health, culture, tourism, mining, infrastructure and manufacturing.

“He was appointed to the Foreign Service on June 1, 2023, and served as Zambia’s Ambassador to China in Beijing,” the President stated.

President Hichilema further described the late Dr Zyuulu as a patriotic citizen and senior diplomat who put the interests of the nation first and actively supported the government’s foreign policy, which is centered on economic diplomacy.

He said the late Ambassador’s contribution to national development and public service will remain an inspiration to other public servants.

President Hichilema has since urged public servants serving both at home and abroad to emulate Dr Zyuulu’s patriotism, hard work and loyalty.

He also encouraged the late Ambassador’s children and family members to seek comfort in God during this difficult period.

And Dr Zyuulu’s brother, Bbalewa Zyuulu said his brother, who was the first born in the family, departed this world with distinction, wisdom and honour.

He thanked the government for the support and honour accorded the late Ambassador during his illness and following his death.

Meanwhile, Dr Zyuulu’s close friend, Mulenga Musepa, described him as a think-tank and reservoir of knowledge who made immense contributions to public service and the corporate world.

In his sermon, Salvation Army Lusaka City Temple Secretary for Business and Administration, Britius Munkombwe, urged the bereaved family not to lose hope but to continue putting their trust in God.

Lieutenant Colonel Munkombwe said the Bible clearly teaches that life and death are in God’s hands and that believers belong to the Lord in both life and death.

Later, the Secretary to the Cabinet led hundreds of mourners, government officials, family members and friends in paying their last respects to the late Ambassador.

Dr Zyuulu aged 64, died at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka on Thursday, July 30, 2026 after an illness.

The late Zambian Envoy is survived by a spouse, Modester, three children and two grandchildren.

President Hichilema has accorded Dr Zyuulu an official funeral and declared Thursday, August 6, 2026, as a Day of National Mourning.

The late Ambassador’s body will lie in state today and will be put to rest tomorrow, Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Musana Village in Chikankata District of Southern Province.

The church service was attended by senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, Salvation Army Church members, relatives and friends, among others.
