Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi has dismissed claims that police blocked the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) from campaigning in Ndola, insisting officers only intervened to stop an unauthorised procession while the party’s rally proceeded as planned.

Responding to allegations made by NRPUP president Brian Mundubile, Yuyi said police facilitated the party’s campaign meeting in Twapia and deployed officers solely to maintain law and order. He said the rally itself was allowed to proceed without interference.

Yuyi explained that police only intervened after some NRPUP supporters embarked on a roadshow and procession that was not part of the agreed campaign programme.

“We never stopped their campaigns. We allowed them to campaign freely and the rally went ahead. The only thing police stopped was the illegal procession because it was not part of the agreed programme,” Yuyi said.

He disclosed that 14 NRPUP supporters were arrested for unlawful assembly after allegedly participating in the unauthorised procession. Yuyi said it was therefore misleading to suggest that police had frustrated the opposition party’s campaign when its scheduled rally was held without interruption.

Mundubile had earlier alleged that police attempted to block the Twapia rally because they did not want the NRPUP addressing supporters on what he described as stolen Food Reserve Agency funds. He claimed police had been instructed to stop the meeting and that it eventually proceeded because of the large number of supporters who turned up.

Yuyi rejected the allegations, maintaining that police neither interfered with the rally nor sought to prevent the party from campaigning. He said officers deployed to political activities were mandated to ensure public safety, peace and order, rather than intimidate political parties or disrupt their campaign programmes.

In a separate matter, Yuyi dismissed reports linking opposition members to a recent break-in at the United Party for National Development (UPND) Dag Hammarskjöld Constituency secretariat in Twapia. He said preliminary investigations indicated that unknown burglars were responsible and that investigations were continuing.

Meanwhile, Mundubile alleged in a Facebook post that some NRPUP members were attacked by unknown people in Kitwe on Thursday, with several campaign vehicles reportedly stoned around 12:30 hours. Police had not confirmed the alleged attack by press time.

Separately, UPND youths in Kitwe distanced themselves from a reported altercation involving members of the Tonse Alliance. Kitwe District UPND Youth Information and Publicity Secretary Chambala Mazimba said the ruling party had no connection to the incident.

Mazimba maintained that the fracas was an internal matter involving Tonse Alliance members led by Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, and should not be politicised or linked to the UPND. He urged the public to reject misinformation and called on UPND members to remain calm and disciplined as the country prepares for the general election.
