An opposition campaign rally by the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) in Mwinilunga District, North-Western Province, was briefly interrupted after supporters repeatedly chanted the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) slogan.

Former Mwinilunga Member of Parliament Newton Samakayi, who recently left the UPND to campaign for NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, inadvertently led the crowd in chanting the UPND slogan during the rally.

As he addressed supporters, Samakayi shouted “Zambia!”, prompting the crowd to respond with “Forward iwe!”—a slogan commonly associated with the UPND. He continued the chant before another official on stage reminded him and the supporters that they were attending an NRPUP rally.

A video of the incident later circulated on social media, attracting reactions from users.

Samakayi recently resigned from the UPND after serving for 10 years as Member of Parliament for Mwinilunga West and has since withdrawn from this year’s parliamentary race.

Meanwhile, NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile pledged to expand the free education programme if elected.

Mr Mundubile said his administration would provide free school books and uniforms in addition to free education.

He also pledged to upgrade the Solwezi–Mwinilunga–Ikeleng’i Road to bituminous standard, saying the project would enhance trade with Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Mr Mundubile said improving the road network would stimulate economic growth and improve access to regional markets for farmers and traders.
