Headlines 1 min.Read Nason Msoni: PF struggling to gain ground in rural Zambia By Lusaka Times Editor July 31, 2026 FacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsAppOPPOSITION politician Nason Msoni has cautioned the Tonse Patriotic Front (PF) that it faces significant challenges in rebuilding support, particularly in rural Zambia where there’s significant voting population, following his recent travels across the country.
Msoni said his observations indicate that the former ruling party has failed to establish a strong grassroots presence, attributing this largely to the social intervention programmes implemented by the UPND Government under President Hakainde Hichilema.
He cited initiatives such as the Social Cash Transfer programme and the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), arguing that these have had a tangible impact on people’s lives.
“Many rural communities are experiencing levels of development and empowerment that they say they had not witnessed since independence,” Msoni said.
He further argued that the opposition’s greatest weakness lies in its inability to articulate a compelling alternative policy agenda capable of persuading voters to change course.
According to Msoni, the opposition’s messaging has lacked originality and has instead been characterised by confrontational rhetoric, intimidation and aggression rather than substantive policy proposals.
He warned that such an approach risks alienating voters, many of whom still vividly recall the violence associated with PF political militias during previous election periods.
“There has not been a significant generational shift in the electorate since the 2021 general election. The experiences of many voters remain fresh, and so too do their perceptions and expectations of the PF,” Msoni said.
He maintained that unless the opposition presents credible alternative policies and adopts a more constructive campaign strategy, it will struggle to broaden its appeal ahead of the forthcoming elections.
