Government has stressed that achieving national development requires effective and robust dissemination of information to ensure citizens actively participate in the country’s development agenda.

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, says access to accurate and timely information is critical in enabling citizens to contribute to sustainable national development.

Mr Kawana says the Government’s target of increasing Zambia’s annual copper production to three million Metric Tonnes (MT) by 2030 can only be achieved if the public and key stakeholders are adequately informed about the strategies and interventions required to attain the target.

That the PS said this in Lusaka today, when he officially launched the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Digital Platform, the Podcast.

Mr Kawana commended the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development for investing in K1.2 million modern communication infrastructure to improve public access to information on the mining sector.

He said the establishment of the podcast demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that the public receives accurate and credible information from experts and other stakeholders.

Mr Kawana further said the podcast will enhance implementation of the Access to Information Act by providing citizens with an easily accessible platform where they can obtain information on government policies, programmes and reforms in the mining sector.

He urged public institutions to allocate resources towards communication and public engagement to enhance transparency and improve service delivery.

Mr Kawana said members of the public will be able to search and access discussions on key issues such as local content regulations and other mining policies through the digital platform.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary, Kabeta Hapenga, disclosed that the Ministry has in recent years undertaken several policy and legal reforms whose success depends on effective communication with stakeholders.

Dr Hapenga noted that the podcast has been established to strengthen stakeholder engagement and improve communication on reforms taking place in the mining sector to significantly transform the country’s economy.

He further revealed that his Ministry has developed a stakeholder engagement strategy that outlines key audiences and the frequency of communication to ensure all stakeholders remain informed.

Dr Hapenga explained that the dedicated podcast platform will provide consistent updates on the Government’s mining policies, including the target of producing three million MT of copper annually and the implementation of local content regulations.

He noted that his Ministry plays a central role in Zambia’s economic transformation and therefore requires continuous engagement with traditional leaders, mining companies, investors and members of the public.

Dr Hapenga said the launch of the podcast marks an important milestone in the ministry’s efforts to promote transparency, public awareness and stakeholder participation in the development of Zambia’s mining sector.

The official launch of the podcast was witnessed by senior government officials from the two ministries and as well as ZANIS Director, Ms Loyce Saili.
