Lusaka District Commissioner, Rosa Kayuni says there is need for concerted efforts from all the stakeholders in the district to plan on how the negative effects of the anticipated El-nino can be reduced.

Ms Kayuni noted that the climate information on the national seasonal outlook for 2026/2027 rain season is critical for planning and preparedness for the district.

She was speaking during the District Disaster Risk Reduction Planning (DRRP) meeting in Lusaka.

‘’The information provided is critical for planning and preparedness for our district and therefore, we should use the climate information to strengthen preparedness and protect lives and livelihoods rather than wait for disaster to occur,” she said.

Ms Kayuni lamented that the district had been experiencing serious disasters in the previous years, which were mainly floods and epidemics.

She said it was the duty of the DDMC members to carry out interventions before, during and after a disaster.

The District Commissioner said the departmental disaster risk reduction plans being unveiled must endeavor to prevent, lessen disaster impact, restore livelihoods and enhance resilience among the affected communities.

Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company, Solid Waste Collecting Officer, Peula Makeleta said her organisation had lined up a program to collect solid waste in the city.

Ms Peula said her organisation had engaged 24 franchise contractors that help to collect waste from markets, households and business premises.

She further said 100 community-based enterprises were also engaged to manage waste in the Peri-urban areas.

“We collect waste from the markets and accumulate points,” she said.

Meanwhile, Senior Agricultural officer, Elizabeth Kabwe said her department had put in place measures to strengthen the early warning system to help prepare the farmers for the negative impacts of the El-nino.

Ms Kabwe added that promotion of drought tolerant seed variety and crops is among the programmes being undertaken by her department.

“We are encouraging farmers to grow early to medium maturing crop varieties during this coming farming season to cope with the projected El-nino weather patterns,” she said.
