Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Permanent Secretary for Administration, Margaret Miyoba, has appreciated the Keeping Girls in School and beyond initiative that has supported over 257, 000 vulnerable girls since inception in 2016.

Ms Miyoba says by September 2026, the government will scale up the programme to 116 districts by adding 21 more districts to the existing 95 districts due to the positive impact the project has on the vulnerable girl child.

That she said this during the 2026 Annual Keeping Girls in School and Beyond Academic Symposium in Luangwa District held under the theme,” Empowering Girls: Creating leaders of tomorrow”.

She explained that the government is implementing the Girls’ Education and Women Empowerment and Livelihood for Human Capital (GEWEL II) across all the ten Provinces of Zambia with support from the World Bank and other cooperating partners, through the Multi-Dollar Trust Fund.

“The KGS programme has seen more than 30, 000 vulnerable girls completing their secondary education and three thousand from these have been awarded tertiary education support scholarships with 150 completing their tertiary education in readiness for transitioning into the world of work”, she explained.

Ms Miyoba encouraged the learners to appreciate the KGS Academic Symposium because it promotes sharing of best practices on enhancing academic excellence among KGS implementing schools so as to contribute to the development of human capital for national development.

Luangwa District Commissioner, Luke Chikani, thanked the government for the free education that has seen over 14, 489 learners in school in 2026 compared to the 9, 456 learners in Luangwa District in 2021.

Mr Chikani said this policy has increased opportunities for learners from disadvantaged families to access boarding facilities, following the reduction of the fees to K1000.

“These achievements reaffirm the Government’s commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of their socio-economic background, has access to quality education”, Mr Chikani said.

Meanwhile, District Education Board Secretary, Motive Kampelya, explained that the district has 31 vulnerable girls fully sponsored under the KGS in different universities and colleges.

Mr Kampelya said with much academic encouragement given to the girl children, the district has recorded an increase in the pass rate from 72.85 percent in 2024 to 81.14 percent in 2025 becoming the best performing in the Lusaka Province.

“Guest of Honor, allow me to boast that Luangwa District scooped the first position at Grade Twelve level in Lusaka Province and this achievement can only be attributed to the good education policies initiated by the government”, he proudly remarked.
