Zambia : Increased People Movements Contributing To Malaria Spread- EMF

End Malaria Fund (ENF) Chairperson, Peter Cottan, says increased movement of people across the country is contributing to the spread of malaria.

Mr Cottan adds that the alleged influx of people from one province to another is fueling the risk of transmitting malaria to areas where cases have previously been low.

In an interview with  the media in Lusaka today, Mr Cottan expressed concern that the re-emergence of malaria particularly in Lusaka is seeming higher, attributing it partly to increased population movement between provinces.

He said the EMF is working with the government through the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to intensify malaria prevention and awareness campaigns across the country.

Mr Cottan disclosed that the Fund soon plans to distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets ahead of the rainy season, targeting over 6,500 households in various districts.

He observed that the distribution of mosquito nets has previously contributed to a reduction in malaria deaths, demonstrating the importance of preventive measures

Mr Cottan added that the distribution exercise will also involve community sensitisation, marches, media engagements and youth participation to encourage people to sleep under mosquito nets.

The EMF Chairperson urged beneficiaries to use the mosquito nets for their intended purpose of preventing malaria and sleeping under treated nets, rather than using them for activities such as fishing.

He further revealed that the Fund is exploring the possibility of manufacturing mosquito nets and malaria medicines locally to reduce the country’s dependence on imports.

Mr Cottan said local production would help Zambia take greater control of its malaria response and reduce the millions of dollars spent importing mosquito nets and medicines.

He said increased investment in health infrastructure, including clinics and district hospitals, is important in the fight against malaria.

Mr Cottan has since appealed to the corporate sector, individuals and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at ending malaria in Zambia.

He stressed that collective efforts are needed to save lives, citing the organisation’s motto “Malaria starts with me, malaria ends with you”.

Mr Cottan also noted that though major achievements have been made in fighting malaria, the disease remains a significant cause of illness and death in Zambia, with one in five children under the age of five infected with malaria parasites, and other vulnerable population groups at risk.
