The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), has cautioned broadcasters to adhere to outlined guidelines and not publish unverified information ahead of this year’s General Election.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, IBA Director General, Webster Malido, who urged broadcasters to exercise caution when handling information, noted that elections results should only be broadcasted once they have been announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Mr Malido states that this is to ensure that the public receives accurate, reliable and verified information concerning the elections.

“Broadcasters are urged to avoid content that promotes hurt speech, violence or the dissemination of unverified information,” he stated.

He emphasised that all election related content should be accurate, verified and in a manner that represents public interests in order to avoid the spread of misinformation.

The Authority further encouraged members of the public as well as political parties and other stakeholders to make use of the complaint’s procedure established under the election guidelines.

“Complaints relating to the coverage of political parties, candidates or electoral issues should first be submitted to the broadcasting station concerned which is required to respond within two days’ o during the election period,” he stated.

Mr Malido highlighted that where no response is received during that period, only then can the matter be escalated to the Authority in accordance with the law.

The authority has since assured the public and electoral stakeholders of continued monitoring of election throughout the election period aimed at support compliance with the law, address complaints and ensure that all election coverage serves public interests among others.
