HH Says Zambia Is Peaceful, Opposition Says Look Closer – A Discussion on Zambia’s Current State

President Hakainde Hichilema told world leaders at the United Nations that Zambia is a peaceful country where people can come and invest. Opposition leaders say the situation on the ground tells another story about zambia.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe read the President’s statement in New York. It said Zambia is not at war, and that people disagreed during the elections but handled their differences peacefully, reflecting the spirit of zambia.

“Zambia is at peace, Zambia is open for partnership, and Zambia is ready to grow,” the statement said.

The President invited investors to create jobs, build skills and grow businesses in farming, mining, energy, tourism and other sectors under the Grow Zambia Agenda. He said the Government will take lawful measures to stop any political dispute from turning into violence, and that Zambia is asking for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council from 2027 to 2029.

EFF leader Kasonde Mwenda said the President should not tell the world there is no crisis. Zambians are going through the hardest time since independence, he said, with a disputed election, a divided nation and opposition leaders in detention.

Mr Mwenda said Brian Mundubile, Makebi Zulu and 16 others have been locked up on treason charges, which carry no bail, and asked the State to release them while it continues looking for evidence.

Green Party leader Peter Sinkamba said the President’s advisers either gave him wrong information or he chose to ignore it. He said the European Union, the African Union and others had raised concerns about the election.

The President goes to the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday and Wednesday to look for more investment for Zambia.

ECZ Declared Mapatizya Winner With 10 Results Missing, Court Told

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) declared a winner in the Mapatizya parliamentary election even though results from 10 polling stations could not be found, the Livingstone High Court heard.

The evidence emerged in a petition brought by independent candidate Clive Miyanda, who is challenging the declaration of United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Emeldah Munashabantu as the constituency’s Member of Parliament. Ms Munashabantu was declared winner with 14,812 votes, against 14,330 for the petitioner.

Mapatizya Returning Officer Newton Mudenda told the court that violence erupted at the Kabanga Secondary School tallying centre shortly after polling ended. The disturbances forced the verification and totalling exercise to be moved out of Mapatizya to Zimba Secondary School.

During the movement of election materials, Mr Mudenda said, some ballot boxes fell from the convoy and could not immediately be accounted for. Some of the boxes were later recovered. The results from 10 polling stations were not.

He described what happened once the count resumed at the new venue.

“After several hours of searching for the missing results at Zimba Secondary School, which became the new consolidation centre, the documents could not be found and I subsequently sought guidance from the ECZ, particularly District Electoral Officer Lubinda Mwala, who advised me to consult stakeholders on the way forward,” Mr Mudenda said.

He told the court that the stakeholders agreed that results from the remaining 64 polling stations be announced, leaving out the 10 that could not be traced.

The petitioner’s lawyers contested that account, telling the court that no such consultations took place. Under cross-examination, Mr Mudenda was also unable to produce evidence that he had personally reported the violence to the police.

The petitioner’s own evidence, given on Friday, went further. Miyanda told the court that figures verified by the campaign team from GEN 20 forms covering all 74 polling stations showed a total of 18,359 votes, not the 14,330 announced by the ECZ. That tally would exceed the 14,812 votes on which Ms Munashabantu was declared the winner.

The petition also alleges that, in some polling stations, figures were wrongly recorded between the two candidates, with votes won by the petitioner credited to the UPND candidate and her votes recorded in the petitioner’s favour. Miyanda further told the court that some of the results the ECZ said were missing were among the results from the 64 polling stations that were eventually announced.

The evidence places two questions before the court: whether a result could be declared without 10 polling stations, and whether the figures that were announced were correctly recorded.

The hearing has now closed, and the court said it would communicate a date for judgment between October 5 and 19, 2026.
