Hotel and Catering Association of Zambia (HCAZ) past president, Christopher Nsenje has called on stakeholders in the country to work together and invest in Zambian people, local produce and their potential to promote the growth of the country’s gastronomy industry.

Mr Nsenje says there is need for concerted efforts to build a future where Zambian gastronomy can flourish and benefit current and future generations

He said the gastronomy industry also provides opportunities for small businesses to grow by giving them a platform to showcase their products and services alongside bringing together food, culture, tradition, history, identity and the country’s heritage.

He was speaking in Lusaka last evening during the second edition of the Zambia Gastronomy Awards.

Mr Nsenje also presented certificates to winners in various categories during the awards ceremony such as best hotel promoting food and culture, best food market, best African restaurant, best African chef, best Zambian traditional song, and best Zambian traditional dance group.

He said the awards provide a platform to showcase and promote the talent and creativity of Zambian chefs, farmers, entrepreneurs, hotels and other players in the food industry.

Mr Nsenje said promoting Zambian cuisine can help strengthen agriculture, create livelihoods, boost tourism and preserve the country’s cultural heritage.

He has since called on the government, the corporate sector and other stakeholders in tourism, agriculture and related sectors to partner with the industry in promoting Zambian gastronomy.

And Tourism Council of Zambia Board member, Chanda Mwale said gastronomy is a key component of the tourism industry as tourists seek to experience the culture and identity of destinations they visit.

Ms Mwale said Zambia’s ambition to achieve five million tourist arrivals requires the country to strengthen its culinary tourism offering.

She said the Tourism Council of Zambia is committed to supporting the development of a culinary value chain that creates jobs, supports local farmers and promotes authentic Zambian cuisine.

She said the Zambia Gastronomy Awards are helping create a platform for chefs, hotels, restaurants and other players in the hospitality industry to showcase their talents and contribute to tourism development.

She congratulated all the nominees and winners and urged stakeholders to work together to position Zambia as a leading culinary tourism destination as the country works towards its five million tourist arrivals target.

Meanwhile, Zambia Gastronomy Awards Founder, Sonika Mbewe called for increased sponsorship and funding to enable the awards to grow and benefit more players in the food industry.

Ms Mbewe said the awards bring together hotels, chefs, food vendors, musicians and other service providers, thereby creating employment opportunities.
