Zambia : Govt Receives 17 Classroom Blocks, Hails Partnerships In Education Sector

Government says partnerships in the education sector remain critical to expanding education infrastructure and addressing the growing demand for classroom space following the implementation of the Free Education Policy and the Competency-Based Curriculum.

Speaking during the handover of 17 newly constructed classroom blocks by Let’s Build Foundation at Robert Den Secondary School, Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary for Administration, Noriana Muneku, who received the infrastructure on behalf of government, said the development marks another milestone in government’s efforts to transform the education sector through collaboration with cooperating partners and the private sector.

Ms Muneku added that the new facilities, which will benefit nine secondary schools in Lusaka Province, will ease congestion and provide learners with a conducive learning environment.

She said every classroom and desk provided is an investment in Zambia’s future, adding that quality education is key to national development.

“Every classroom built is an investment in our country’s future,” she said.

The Permanent Secretary commended Let’s Build Foundation for complementing government’s efforts to improve education infrastructure through strategic partnerships.

Speaking at the same event, Let’s Build Foundation Country Director, Ngosa Zulu, said the project reflects the foundation’s commitment to supporting government’s education agenda under the Free Education Policy.

Ms Zulu said the foundation has handed over 17 classroom blocks comprising 45 classrooms to nine secondary schools in Lusaka, Chongwe, Rufunsa and Luangwa Districts at a cost of about K29 Million.

She added that the foundation also donated 2,250 desks and chairs, together with staff furniture, valued at about K33 Million, bringing the total investment to approximately K63 Million.

Ms Zulu said the foundation is committed to increasing access to quality secondary education in line with Vision 2030, the Eighth National Development Plan and the Ministry of Education’s priorities.

She further noted that while the Free Education Policy has increased school enrolment, investment in classroom infrastructure must keep pace.

“Access to education must be matched with adequate learning spaces,” she said.

Ms Zulu disclosed that since 2024, the foundation has completed 119 classrooms across 26 secondary schools in Lusaka Province, creating space for about 12,000 learners.

She added that construction of another 36 classrooms is underway and is expected to be completed by November, bringing the total number of classrooms built in the province to 155.

Ms Zulu thanked government, donors, contractors and other partners for supporting the initiative and urged schools and communities to protect the new infrastructure.

And Chongwe District Commissioner, Evans Lupiya, thanked Let’s Build Foundation for supporting government’s efforts to address classroom shortages through public-private partnerships.

Dr Lupiya described education as the greatest equaliser and said quality infrastructure gives every learner a fair chance to succeed.

He noted that overcrowded classrooms had negatively affected learning outcomes, saying the new facilities will improve both teaching and learning.

Dr Lupiya said the classroom blocks represent an investment in Zambia’s future professionals, including teachers, engineers and doctors.

“These classrooms are an investment in our future leaders,” he said.

He further commended the foundation for delivering quality infrastructure that will improve the lives of learners across the beneficiary schools.

Meanwhile, a pupil from Chaisa Secondary School thanked Let’s Build Foundation for creating a conducive learning environment, saying the new classrooms will enable more learners to access quality education and pursue their dreams.
