Speaking during an election reporting capacity-building workshop organised by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) in Ndola, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana said Zambia’s peaceful electoral environment was being threatened by the spread of false information from individuals based outside the country.
Mr. Kawana alleged that some Zambians residing in European countries were deliberately publishing misleading information intended to undermine national peace and stability. He appealed to the EU election observers to relay the concerns to their respective governments and encourage cooperation in addressing the issue.
He said collaboration with international partners would help curb the spread of disinformation and ensure accountability for those responsible.
The European Union has deployed an Election Observation Mission to Zambia to assess the electoral process against international standards.
The remarks were made during a workshop that brought together journalists, editors, and media trainers from Copperbelt Province to discuss ethical election reporting, fact-checking, and conflict-sensitive journalism ahead of the August polls.
