Health 1 min.Read Government calls for healthcare protection By Kevin Kabwe October 1, 2026 FacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsAppGovernment has called on citizens, the private sector and quasi-government institutions to protect the gains Zambia has made in the health sector while strengthening the country’s capacity to finance and deliver quality healthcare.
Public Private Dialogue Forum (PPDF) Co-Chairperson Lackson Kasonka says increased domestic production of essential health commodities will contribute to Zambia’s economic growth.
Professor Kasonka, who is also Permanent Secretary for Special Duties at Cabinet Office, observed that diminishing donor funding is putting pressure on essential services and challenging the country to develop a more sustainable health financing model.
He was speaking in Lusaka today during the second PPDF Technical Working Group meeting held at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
He said the government has a central responsibility in strengthening the health sector, while the private sector brings valuable resources, innovation, expertise and investment.
He observed that a healthy population is critical to productivity, enterprise, investment and national prosperity.
The Co-Chairperson Government- side called for stronger partnerships between government, the private sector and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions that respond to national priorities and deliver measurable benefits to communities.
Prof Kasonka said the meeting should result in clear priorities, shared responsibilities and actionable commitments towards building a stronger and more resilient health sector.
Meanwhile, PPDF Co-Chairperson, Shailen Desai has urged members of the technical working group to actively participate in discussions aimed at strengthening public-private partnerships.
Dr Desai said stakeholders should utilise the platforms provided to openly discuss challenges and identify win-win solutions rather than raising concerns after meetings.
He said the public sector has a responsibility to facilitate an environment in which the private sector can operate effectively and contribute to economic growth.
He cited the tourism technical working group as an example of a sector where public-private collaboration has contributed to improved cooperation and development.
The Co-Chairperson Private-side stressed that the PPDF provides an opportunity for stakeholders; public and government to work together towards Zambia’s economic growth.
The meeting was attended by development experts and other stakeholders with expertise in economic development.
