Lusaka - Zambia: Football Association of Zambia President Keith Mweemba says Football House will conduct a post-mortem and make necessary adjustments
Sports 1 min.Read FAZ promises post-mortem after Copper Queens’ WAFCON heartbreak By sports August 6, 2026 FacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsAppFootball Association of Zambia President Keith Mweemba says Football House will conduct a post-mortem and make necessary adjustments following the Copper Queens’ early exit from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Zambians were eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday night despite beating Malawi 2-1 in their final Group C match in Rabat.
The result also means Zambia has missed out on qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Zambia, Malawi and Nigeria all finished the group stage on six points each. However, the Copper Queens exited due to an inferior head-to-head record among the three teams.
Mweemba said FAZ was disappointed with the group stage elimination but acknowledged the tournament rules.
“There is no debate about the rules, but we could have hoped for a better way to conclude the tightly contested group which was virtually the group of death, “he said.
“We will be doing a thorough post-mortem of the tournament and ensure that we take lessons going forward,” Mweemba added.
He saluted the players and technical bench for their effort despite the first-round exit.
“It was a separation anchored on peculiar circumstances that unfortunately we have to accept as part of the rules of the game,” he stated.
With WAFCON over, Mweemba said attention must now shift to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers.
The qualifiers start in October 2026 with back-to-back games against Uganda in the first of five knockout rounds.
“We now have to focus on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers which we start in October with back-to-back games against Uganda,” he said.
Mweemba pledged that FAZ will honour the support from government and sponsors by working towards Olympic qualification.
The FAZ President also acknowledged Zambians for their support during WAFCON.
“We wish to thank the Zambian people for their massive support during the tournament which kept the team motivated to achieve more. We also wish to thank the government and Konkola Copper Mines for their support towards the team’s participation,” he said.
