The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has held a youth conference in Ndola aimed at enhancing youth participation in the 2026 General Election.

Speaking during the official opening of the conference at Ndola Skills Training Centre today, Copperbelt Province Electoral Officer, Shaft Musaka, represented by Ndola District Electoral Officer, George Mulenga, expressed satisfaction that participants had been drawn from various political parties, Civil Society Organisations and the Church.

Mr Musaka said young people are a vital segment of the population as they constitute a pool of future leaders who will drive the country’s social, political and economic development.

He noted that youths make up more than half of the over eight million registered voters in the national Register of Voters, making it important for them to understand their role in ensuring successful elections and actively participating in the electoral process.

“As young people, you have the power to shape the decisions that will affect not only your lives but also the lives of generations to come,” he said.

He urged young people not to view elections as an activity reserved for older or more experienced citizens, stressing that every eligible voter, regardless of age, has a role to play.

Mr Musaka added that youth participation is essential at every stage of the electoral process and encouraged young people to contribute meaningfully.

He further highlighted the constitutional provision for 40 proportional representation seats in Parliament, comprising 20 seats for women, 15 for youths and five for persons with disabilities.

Mr Musaka urged youths to educate themselves using information available through news outlets, social media platforms and community radio stations.

He also encouraged participants to share the knowledge gained during the conference with other young people who may not have access to such information.

Mr Musaka said the Commission seeks to build a pool of knowledgeable and enthusiastic young people who can help educate their peers about the Commission’s operations and the electoral process, while promoting peaceful participation by discouraging violence, hate speech, insults and intimidation.

Mr Musaka appealed to all registered youth voters to exercise their democratic right by turning out in large numbers on election day and contributing to the country’s decision-making process.
