LUSAKA – Zambia is no longer defined only by the people who live within its borders.

Across Africa, Europe, North America, Asia, the Middle East and elsewhere, Zambians are building careers, running businesses, studying, raising families and contributing to communities far from home.

But wherever they are, the connection to Zambia often remains strong.

The new Zambia & Diaspora section on Zambian Eye is designed to tell those stories — and to look at the growing relationship between Zambia and its citizens abroad.

This is a space for the stories that connect home and abroad.

More than stories about Zambians overseas

Zambians in the diaspora are often reported when something goes wrong — a death abroad, an arrest, a deportation, a crisis or an emergency.

But there is another side to the diaspora story.

There are Zambians making a difference in hospitals, universities, businesses, technology, media, finance, academia, sport and other professions around the world.

Some are creating businesses that connect international markets to Zambia. Others are supporting families at home, investing in property and businesses, mentoring young people or returning with skills and experience acquired abroad.

Zambia & Diaspora will seek to tell more of those stories.

Our approach

At Zambian Eye, we want this section to go beyond simply reporting that a Zambian has done something abroad.

We want to tell the story behind the achievement.

Who is the person?
How did they get there?
What challenges did they overcome?
What can other Zambians learn from their experience?
And what does their story tell us about the relationship between Zambia and its diaspora?

Zambian Eye will also use this space to explain issues that affect Zambians abroad, giving readers practical information alongside the human stories.

Because the diaspora is not separate from Zambia.

It is part of the Zambian story.
