Chipata Central Hospital recorded over 2,500 pregnancies in the first quarter of 2026, with 20 cases identified as ectopic pregnancies.

This was disclosed by Chipata Central Hospital Registrar in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Bwalya Phiri, during the Zaumoyo Health Programme .

Dr Phiri said the hospital continues to attend to a high number of women seeking antenatal services, with concerns around teenage pregnancies and late bookings.

He explained that an ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, commonly in the fallopian tube, and can be life-threatening if not managed early.

“Between January and March this year, we managed 22 cases of ectopic pregnancy. Most of them came in as emergencies,” he said.

Dr Phiri explained that the causes of ectopic pregnancies are many but also includes Pelvic infections like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), often caused by Sexually Transmitted bacteria such as Chlamydia or Gonorrhea, that leave scars that block the tube.

He mentioned that other conditions that lead to the situation of a fertilized egg getting stuck and implanting outside the main cavity of the uterus are scar tissue from past surgeries and endometriosis.

Dr expressed concern that the majority of the 22 women that had ectopic pregnancies sought medical attention late, leading to doctors conducting emergency surgeries.

He urged women to begin antenatal care early and to seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe abdominal pain or abnormal bleeding during pregnancy.

Mr Phiri further called on families and communities to support women in accessing reproductive health services in order to reduce maternal complications and deaths.

According to health experts and reports by Cleveland Clinic, a woman can still conceive after ectopic pregnancy surgery, and statistics show that roughly 65% to 85% of women go on to have a healthy, successful pregnancy within two years.
