Zambia : Austin Liato Accorded Official Funeral

President Hakainde Hichilema has accorded former Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Cabinet Minister, Austin Liato, an official funeral.

President Hichilema has since declared Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as a one-day period of national mourning in honour of the late Mr Liato, in recognition of his contribution to national development during his tenure as minister.

Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa disclosed this in a press statement issued to the media in Lusaka this evening.

Mr Kangwa said the late former cabinet minister will be put to rest tomorrow at Leopards Hill Memorial Park in Lusaka.

He said the burial will be preceded by an official funeral church service at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka at 10:00 hours.

He said the national mourning will be observed from 06:00 to 18:00 hours, during which all flags are expected to fly at half-mast.

The late Mr Liato aged 60, died on August 6, 2026, after an illness at Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka.

He served as Minister of Labour and Social Security from 2008 to 2011 in the MMD administration.
