Zambia and European Union reaffirm strong partnership

EUROPEAN Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Sikela has reaffirmed Zambia's standing as a beacon of democracy and encouraged Zambia and the European Union to look ahead while maintaining respect for the rule of law. EUROPEAN Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Sikela has reaffirmed Zambia’s standing as a beacon of democracy and encouraged Zambia and the European Union to look ahead while maintaining respect for the rule of law.

The reaffirmation was made on the sidelines of the 81st U.N. General Assembly in New York during a Zambia-EU bilateral meeting.

President Hakainde Hichilema was represented at the meeting by Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe, who is head of delegation.

During the meeting, the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to building a forward-looking partnership with Zambia and stressed the importance of Zambia’s continued leadership in support of the U.N. Charter, multilateralism and the rules-based international order.

Zambia and the EU agreed to further deepen the existing partnership through investment, value addition and economic cooperation aligned with the Grow Zambia agenda. The EU reaffirmed particular interest in Africa’s role in electric-vehicle battery and critical-mineral value chains, while Zambia welcomed the Global Gateway initiative and EU development cooperation, including budget support of about 110 million euros.

Both sides said strengthening the Zambia-EU partnership remains a priority.

Zambia said the August elections had been broadly peaceful and thanked the EU for deploying an election observation mission, with both sides agreeing that post-election developments should not divert from opportunities to deepen economic cooperation.

The two sides also agreed to continue collaborating on international peace and security.

This is according to a press statement issued by Ms. Namatama Njekwa, First Secretary Press and Public Relations, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations.
