LUSAKA – National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) candidate Gabriel Kibombwe has entered into a consent agreement in favour of Lusaka Mayor-elect Chitambala Mwewa in the mayoral election petition.

The development was brought before the Local Government Elections Tribunal hearing the petition in which Mr Kibombwe had challenged the election and declaration of Mr Mwewa as Lusaka Mayor.

According to information presented before the Tribunal and reported by Phoenix FM, Mr Kibombwe has agreed to the consent in favour of Mr Mwewa.

Mr Kibombwe had petitioned the election results, seeking a declaration that Mr Mwewa’s election as Lusaka Mayor was null and void.

The two were the leading candidates in the August 13, 2026 mayoral election, with Mr Mwewa polling 200,029 votes against Mr Kibombwe’s 195,041 votes.

The difference was 4,988 votes.

The petition had challenged Mr Mwewa’s victory and followed a closely contested election in which Kibombwe questioned aspects of the tallying and declaration of the results.

The Tribunal had earlier allowed the petition to proceed after dismissing preliminary objections raised by Mr Mwewa and the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

The consent agreement now represents a significant development in the case.

The exact terms and legal effect of the consent agreement will be important in determining how the Tribunal formally disposes of the petition.
