The Agriculture Technical Professional Staff Union of Zambia (ATPSUZ) has welcomed the Food Reserve Agency’s (FRA) announcement of K347 per 50 kilogramme bag as maize floor price, describing it as fair and beneficial to farmers.

Speaking in an interview with the media, ATPSUZ President, Oniver Chingobe, said the floor price will help protect farmers from exploitation while ensuring they receive reasonable value for their hard work.

Mr Chingobe, however, said the success of the new floor price will largely depend on the timely payment of farmers after delivering their maize to FRA marketing depots.

He said while ATPSUZ welcomes the K347 floor price, it is important that the payment process is implemented efficiently and without delays.

“As a union, we are calling upon the relevant authorities to strictly adhere to President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive that farmers should be paid promptly,” said Mr Chingobe.

He stated that timely payments will enable farmers to settle outstanding debts and adequately prepare for the next farming season.
