Zambia : 112 MPs Sworn-in

112 Members of Parliament have so far been sworn in by Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, at the Parliament Buildings, in Lusaka.

And speaking in an interview with the media, shortly after being sworn in, Sesheke- East Member of Parliament, Romeo Kang’ombe, says the separation of Sesheke East and Sesheke West constituencies has given him a fresh mandate to deliver development to his people.

Mr Kang’ombe has noted that during his previous term, progress was made in the health sector through the construction of 17 maternity annexes, intended to bridge the gap between communities and health facilities.

Mr Kang’ombe added that classrooms have also been built in nearly all schools, except three, while access to markets had improved, though more still needed to be done.

He emphasised that with the enhanced Constituency Development Funds (CDF), challenges faced in the past will be addressed more effectively.

He explained that Sesheke, being a border town with a 24-hour economy, requires stronger security measures, noting that police posts will be constructed to reduce the distance between communities and law enforcement services.

“So Sesheke East is peri-urban. So most of the places are quite sandy. We are trying to connect the people to the market by constructing all weather gravel roads,” he stated.

He further highlighted the importance of improving access roads, noting that Sesheke East’s sandy terrain made connectivity difficult.

And MP for Choma South, a new constituency, Trevor Mwinde, highlighted the challenges farmers face due to droughts, which have disrupted reliance on dams for gardening and livestock in the area.

He pledged to improve road networks and reopen the long-dormant Masuku railway line to support animal husbandry, particularly for goats, sheep and cattle.

Mr Mwinde noted the constituency’s lack of a hospital, mortuary facilities and limited secondary education, promising to lobby such facilities, including a tertiary technical training institution.

“Choma South, Choma Rural has never had a hospital. We do not even have the facilities of a mortuary and Choma South itself has only one government secondary school so we also believe that we need to expand where possible the secondary school facilities”, Mr Mwinde said.

And Kafue East, Member of Parliament Buumba Malambo said the first priority for her constituency was the improvement of roads, noting that many were in a bad state.

She explained that while some tarred roads had been completed in the previous term, her focus as Member of Parliament was now to work with the community to identify areas that could be opened up, including gazetted and tarred roads.

Ms Malambo added that employment opportunities ranked second among her priorities, stressing that many young people were eager for empowerment and job creation.
