Youth Activist Michelo Kanchele has congratulated the youths that have been nominated to serve as Members of Parliament (MPs), urging them to work hard and deliver on the expectations of young people and the wider Zambian population.
Mr Kanchele said the nomination of youths to Parliament is a positive step towards enhancing youth participation and representation in national governance.
He said this development demonstrates that the government is walking the talk on its commitment to increasing youth participation in decision-making processes.
Speaking in an interview with the media, Mr Kanchele said he was among the youths who advocated for the acceptance of Bill 7, which he said has now opened up opportunities for greater youth representation in Parliament.
He has since urged the nominated youths to take their responsibilities seriously and use the opportunity to champion issues affecting young people.
Mr Kanchele said the nominated MPs should work diligently, remain accountable to the people and ensure that their contribution to Parliament translates into tangible development.
He also called on the youths to demonstrate that young people can effectively contribute to national development when given an opportunity to serve.
Mr Kanchele further expressed appreciation to the government for what he described as a great initiative aimed at giving young people a greater voice in national affairs.
He said the inclusion of more young people in decision-making is important in ensuring that youth concerns are adequately represented in Parliament and other levels of governance.
