TWO former senior government officials have called on losing presidential candidate Brian Mundubile to congratulate President Hakainde Hichilema following his re-election in the 2026 General Election.

Former Vice President Enoch Kavindele said elections were over and those who contested should take a bold step to congratulate the President-elect.

“Elections are over and it is time now for people to go back to work, move forward and remain peaceful and united as they congratulate President Hakainde Hichilema,” Mr Kavindele said.

He said Zambians should thank God for the peace that prevailed during campaigns, voting and the announcement of results.

“Violence has no place in Zambia. I congratulate President Hichilema and expect that he will continue working hard to develop the country,” he said.

Mr Kavindele reminded the nation that in any election there are winners and losers, and urged the opposition to congratulate the President and look forward to the next opportunity, noting that Mr Hichilema himself had contested five times before winning.

Similarly, former Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Vernon Mwaanga urged Mr Mundubile to accept defeat and congratulate President Hichilema, saying the country needed to move in unity and work together to advance national development.

Human rights champion and democracy specialist Ngande Mwanjiti also praised President Hichilema, saying his campaign strategy was based on achievements rather than emotion, with more than 130 rallies held across the country.

“The constituency of presidential candidates is the whole country. For this approach, based on achievements, we must learn as we congratulate President Hakainde Hichilema,” Mr Mwanjiti said.

He stressed that stability, peace and unity had informed the majority of voters and reminded Zambians of the importance of upholding the rule of law.

Mr Mwanjiti said criminal intentions should not be hidden in the electoral process and urged relevant government wings to clean up irregularities without victimisation.
