Chitambala Mwewa has at last been declared the winner of the Lusaka mayoral polls, riding on the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket, after the finalisation of the 2026 general elections.

Mwewa won the Lusaka mayoral seat after securing 200,029 votes.

The declaration by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) puts to rest the drama surrounding the election, after a GEN 20 form made rounds on various platforms, which was viewed as indicating that he had lost to his main challenger, National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP’s) Gabriel Kibombwe.

The form was widely shared among members of his, with other quick to congratulate him as the new Sheriff in Town.

Winner: KIBOMBWE I Gabriel of NRPUP with 32,165 votes.

The form was witnessed by representatives and signed by the Returning Officer.

However, according to the official results, a total of 450,600 votes were cast, with 8,026 ballot papers rejected.

The announced results reveal that NRPUP’s Kibombwe came in second with 195,041 votes, with independent candidate Simon Mwila finishing third with 32,043 votes, followed by Namuchiya Banda with 7,444 votes.

Another independent candidate, Crispin Kabole, polled 4,615 votes, while Citizens First candidate David Nyirenda came last with 3,017 votes.

In his acceptance remarks, Chitambala pledged to prioritise keeping Lusaka clean and called for collaboration with residents to improve the city.

Meanwhile, reacting to the announcement, Kibombwe said it was a selection and not an election.

“Selection, not Election,” he posted on his social media handle.
