TRUMP SIGNS “HELLISH SANCTIONS” AGAINST RUSSIA AND IRAN INTO LAW
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, completing its passage after the Senate approved it 86–11 and the House voted 262–159.
The law expands sanctions targeting Russian officials, financial institutions, military-linked suppliers, energy projects and the “shadow fleet” used to transport Russian oil while evading restrictions. It also extends existing sanctions against Iran.
Most significantly, Trump now has the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the largest purchasers of Russian oil and gas, as well as countries helping Moscow circumvent sanctions. China and India are among the states most exposed, while Turkey could also face pressure.
The tariffs do not automatically take effect at their maximum level. The law places the authority in Trump’s hands, meaning the next test will be implementation: which countries are targeted, how high the tariffs are set and how quickly the administration acts.
The legislation gives Washington one of its strongest economic tools yet for targeting the foreign revenue and international networks sustaining Russia’s war. Trump has now signed it—the world will be watching how forcefully he uses it.
