TRAGEDY ON LAKE TANGANYIKA: AT LEAST 41 DEAD IN BOAT ACCIDENT

At least 41 people have died after a passenger boat capsized on Lake Tanganyika while travelling from Kigoma in Tanzania to Kalemie in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The vessel, reportedly carrying around 100 passengers and cargo, capsized near Mapera village on the Congolese side of the lake.

At least 49 people were rescued, while search operations have continued for those still unaccounted for.

Survivors said passengers were asleep when the vessel began tilting to one side before capsizing. Authorities are yet to officially establish the cause of the tragedy.
