CHIRUNDU POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR CORRUPTION
The Siavonga Subordinate Court has convicted and sentenced Francis Chisala, a police officer at Chirundu Police Station, to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for corruption involving Eight Hundred Kwacha (K800.00).

Lusaka High Court Judge, Hon. Ireen Wishimanga, presiding over the Siavonga Subordinate Court of the First Class convicted Chisala on one (1) count of Corrupt Practices by a Public Officer, contrary to Section 19(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act, Chapter 91 of the Laws of Zambia.

He was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour, effective 25th September 2026.
In July 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested and charged Francis Chisala, the now-convicted person, with one count of Corrupt Practices by a Public Officer.

The details are that Francis Chisala, on dates between 30th November 2020 and 3rd December 2020, in Chirundu District, being a public officer, namely a police officer at Chirundu Police Station, corruptly obtained Eight Hundred Kwacha (K800.00) as gratification from Jeremiah Donkan Phiri as an inducement not to charge him with a traffic offence and to allow him to use the Chirundu-Lusaka Road, a matter or transaction concerning the Zambia Police Service, a public body.
The Anti-Corruption Commission wishes to warn public officers that public office is a position of trust and must be exercised with integrity and in the interest of the public. Public officers should desist from soliciting or accepting bribes or any form of gratification in the execution of their duties.

This conviction and sentence should serve as a warning to public officers that engaging in corrupt practices has serious consequences.

The Commission will continue to investigate and, where evidence establishes an offence, ensure that those involved in corruption face the full force of the law.
