STATE State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka says President Hakainde Hichilema does not make government or UPND decisions based on social media commentary, but on verified facts and information presented to him.

Responding to reports that some former ministers are working with the Tonse Alliance, Mr Hamasaka said social media is filled with falsehoods and disinformation.

He urged the public not to treat everything posted online as factual, adding that credible allegations would be handled through proper channels.

“The President does not run the party based on social media commentary. Indeed, he does not run the Government based on social media commentary,” Mr Hamasaka said.

“Social media has a lot of falsehoods and misinformation. The President relies on facts as provided to him, not these social media rumours being posted. We do not take whatever is posted on social media as literally the truth.”

Meanwhile, UPND Alliance Chairperson Charles Milupi said it is the responsibility of party leadership to investigate any serving MP accused of working with the opposition and take appropriate action.

“Where a serving MP is being accused of working with the opposition, I think it is the party leadership that should follow up on those matters, carry out thorough investigations and take action as necessary,” Mr Milupi said.

“Social media must always be taken with a pinch of salt. All sorts of people make, sometimes, very wild and damaging allegations. Sometimes it is meant to damage people’s reputation. Sometimes it is just meant to punish someone we think did something wrong to us. So, it is very difficult to comment.”
