In a statement, party president Fred M’membe said news of Mr. Kafwaya’s death “sent a cold chill down our spines and has deeply moved the leadership of the Socialist Party.”
The party sent condolences to Mr. Kafwaya’s widow, children, family and friends, and paid tribute to his memory.
Mr. M’membe said growing political division and intolerance had led to “this bloody drama,” adding that no doctrine, election dispute or law enforcement operation could justify “the physical elimination of Kafwaya and any other citizen who might have died with him.”
“No crime can be committed in the name of elections or law enforcement,” he said. “Let a sense of sobriety, humanity and justice prevail in our hearts and in our homeland.”
He concluded: “May Kafwaya’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
