LUSAKA — Socialist Party president Fred M’membe says the death of former Cabinet minister and Tonse Pamodzi Alliance finance chairperson Mutotwe Kafwaya has sent “a cold chill down our spines”, describing the killing as frightening, saddening and deeply disturbing.
M’membe was reacting to the confirmation by Zambia’s Inspector General of Police, Graphael Musamba, that Kafwaya was killed during an exchange of gunfire at opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile’s residence in Lusaka.
He expressed condolences to Kafwaya’s widow, children, family and friends, while paying tribute to his memory.
M’membe warned that Zambia’s growing political divisions and intolerance could have devastating consequences, saying no election dispute, political doctrine or proclaimed principle could justify what he described as the “physical elimination” of Kafwaya or any other citizen who may have died in the incident.
“No crime can be committed in the name of elections or law enforcement,” M’membe said.
He called for sobriety, humanity and justice to prevail as questions continue to surround the circumstances of Kafwaya’s death.
