The Securities and Exchange Commission SEC has described the Just ended 98th Agriculture and Commercial show celebrated under the theme” Fostering Trade and Investment to be critical as it aligns with the commissions mandate to develop Zambia’s capital markets through investor protection.
Speaking during the Agriculture and Commercial show, SEC Director Policy and Market Development Mateyo Lungu told Zambian Business Times-ZBT that the commissions participation at the 98th Agriculture and Commercial show is crucial because the show brings together investors, policy makers and the public.
“ The SEC’s participation is important because the Show brings together entrepreneurs, investors, policy makers and the public, the very stakeholders who benefit from a strong and trusted capital market and this year’s this year’s them aligns with the Commission’s mandate to regulate and develop Zambia’s capital markets while protecting investors.
By ensuring that market operators are licensed, investments are offered transparently and investors are educated, thereby help in creating confidence, which is essential for mobilising savings into productive investment and supporting business growth”, said Mateyo Lungu.
Lungu added that the capital markets are a key part of trade and investment ecosystem and the commission creates a conducive environment for business raise long- term capital for expansion through various instruments in capital markets.
“ Capital markets are a key part of the trade and investment ecosystem. Businesses need patient, long-term capital to expand production, improve technology, reach new markets and create jobs through instruments such as shares, bonds and collective investment schemes,which capital markets facilitates in connecting those who need capital with those who have funds to invest.
For agriculture and commerce, which support value addition, infrastructure, expansion and innovation, all of which contribute to Zambia’s economic growth,” said Lungu. He further mentioned investor protection as one of the key responsibility the commission is fostering considering the increaseing number of fraudulent investment schemes.
“ The key message is verify before you invest. Members of the public should check whether a person or company offering an investment is licensed by the SEC, avoid promises of unusually high or guaranteed returns, read and understand investment documents, ask about risks and fees, and never invest under pressure.And that’s why SEC will also emphasise that regulated investments may carry risk, but they should be offered transparently and through properly licensed institutions,” said Lungu.
